چکیده
Fibrosis (progressive scarring) is a leading cause of organ failure worldwide and causes loss of organ function when normal tissue is replaced with excess connective tissue. Several organs are prone to this process regardless of etiology. The pleiotropic hormone, relaxin, is emerging as a novel antifibrotic therapy. Relaxin has been shown to limit collagen production and reorganization, while stimulating increased collagen degradation. It not only prevents fibrogenesis, but also reduces established scarring. This review summarizes (1) the levels at which relaxin inhibits collagen production and existing collagen overexpression in induced models of fibrosis, and (2) the collagen-related phenotypes of relaxinand LGR7-deficient mice. Recent studies on relaxin-deficient mice have established relaxin as an important, naturally occurring regulator of collagen turnover and provide new insights into the therapeutic potential of relaxin.

Recent insights into anti-tumor immunotherapy have led to a wave of clinical trials involving immunotherapy for lung cancer.Vaccines have evolved from nonspecific immune stimulants, like Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), to much more specific and potent strategies, some of which generate active immune responses against tumor-associated antigens. Understanding the mechanisms of anti-tumor immunity...

Results: During warfarin initiation, the mean slope for rise in International Normalized Ratio (INR) of prothrombin time was significantly associated with age (p=0.03, n=166). Because a relationship between diabetes and warfarin dosing has been suggested previously, we assessed the impact of this comorbidity in our model as well. Diabetes showed relatively little impact, but concomitant treatme...

Nature often employs similar mechanisms to complete similar tasks, thus the evolution of homologous proteins across various organ systems to perform similar but slightly different functions. In this respect, disorders attributed to specific genetic mutations, while initially thought to be restricted in function and purpose, may provide broad insight into general cellular and molecular mechanisms...

Treatment of genetic disease by protein or gene replacement therapy is hampered by immune responses to the therapeutic protein. An excellent example is formation of inhibitory antibodies to coagulation factors in treatment of the X-linked bleeding disorder hemophilia. Experiments in murine and canine models of hemophilia B (deficiency in factor IX) have demonstrated sustained therapeutic levels ...

Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CAMRSA) infections are an emerging problem in the United States and many parts of the world. These infections originate in communities as opposed to hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) infections. If adequate measures are not taken to thoroughly understand and control its changing epidemiology and clinical presentation, it may becom...
